Week gives kids a chance to check out 4-H
4-Hers across Crawford County are celebrating Crawford County 4-H Week this week.

Crawford County 4-H Week is a chance to promote 4-H and encourage young people to become a part of the 4-H program.

Any youth who was between the ages of 8 and 18 as of Sept. 1 can join.

A special club for 5- through 7-year-olds called 4-H Cloverbuds is also offered.

There are lots of great reasons to join 4-H, according to Crawford County Program Coordinator Samantha Gaither.

4-H is a group of young people who are learning leadership, citizenship and life skills and making a difference in their lives and the communities around them, she explained. It's also a family affair, so rather than taking time away from the family, it's really time spent together.

4-H is known for helping young people develop skills for life such as making decisions, communicating, thinking critically and leading.

A long-term study comparing 4-H members to participants in other out-of-school organized youth activities show that 4-Hers do better in school, and are more likely to see themselves going to college; 4-Hers are less likely to engage in risky behaviors, and 4-Hers contribute more to their community.

For more information on joining 4-H, contact Gaither at the University of Illinois Extension office, 546-1549, or by email at sgaither@illinois.edu.

Information is also available at web.extension.illinois.edu/cce/.

Interested persons can also contact local club leaders. In the Hutsonville area, they are Eureka, Brad and Chris Gurley, 563-9984.

Robinson leaders are Bob Duzan, 584-3028; Lauren Gullett, 562-0640; Jodi Draper; Zel and Jeannie Adams, 557-3542; and Lynn and Kristi McCleave, 557-3359.

Oblong leaders are Sarah Pepmeier, 592-6334; Marla Musgrave, 843-3054; Jennifer Clark, 553-8927; Janice Travis, 592-4550; and Shanna Alexander, 562-2327.

In Palestine, call Laura Collier, 586-2928.
